NY Cataract & Eye Health Awareness

NY Cataract Surgeons Satish Modi, M.D. and Andreas Wolter, M.D. of Seeta Eye Centers in Poughkeepsie, New York stressed the importance of being aware of the potential for eye health problems-such as cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration and presbyopia-as the “baby boomer” population ages. “As more and more Americans enter their senior years, the need to preserve eye health and vision becomes more critical in order to maintain an active lifestyle,’ commented Andreas Wolter, M.D. “The prevalence of cataracts in particular is really noteworthy. People today simply do not want to be restricted by the vision limitations imposed by cataracts-nor should they have to,” remarked Dr. Modi. “Today advanced cataract surgery and lens implants offer patients the promise of clear vision and an active lifestyle. With the availability of bladeless laser cataract surgery along with lens implants that can correct astigmatism and near vision presbyopia problems after cataract surgery we have a lot to offer our patients,” he further noted. “The integration of the bladeless cataract surgery and advanced technology lens implants has give patients the opportunity to manage cataract vision problems with greater comfort and confidence,” further explained Dr. Wolter.

Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness worldwide. About 20.5 million Americans age 40 and older have cataracts and more than half of all Americans develop cataracts by age 80. Many patients do not actually know that a cataract is a clouding of the crystalline lens of the eye preventing light rays from passing through it easily. This results in a clouding and blurring of vision. Patients should understand that cataracts are not a growth or a film over the eye. For many patients cataracts start out slowly and have little effect on vision at first. But, as the cataract becomes denser, so does the impact on vision. The most common symptoms that bother patients with cataracts include blurring of vision, sensitivity to light and glare, double vision in one eye, poor night vision, fading or yellowing of colors and the need for frequent changes in glasses or contact lens prescriptions.
