NY Ophthalmologist on Halloween Contact Lenses & Eyes

“Halloween, decorative contact lenses and your eyes may not be the best combination,” commented NY Ophthalmologist Andreas Wolter, M.D. of Seeta Eye Center in Poughkeepsie, New York. “During this particular celebration, lots of Halloween fun lovers like to change the color of their eyes from blue to some far out appearance or ghoulish look by using over-the-counter, decorative contact lenses that may enhance holiday fun, but can lead to serious vision-threatening problems,” he emphasized.

According to the Food and Drug Administration, all contact lenses are regulated medical devices that require a prescription and proper fitting by an eye-care professional. Even someone with perfect vision would still require an eye exam and a prescription in order to wear any kind of contacts, including cosmetic lenses.

Some websites advertise decorative contacts as if they were fashion accessories or toys with fanciful, playful packaging in order to attract teens and young adults, especially girls. The problem is not that people use decorative, noncorrosive lenses-sometimes called Plano-or zero-powered lenses, but that they buy the devices without a prescription through unlicensed vendors on the Internet or at flea markets and specialty shops.

The buyer of these over-the-counter contact lenses faces a huge risk including scratched corneas, pink eye and more serious types of blinding infection as a result of a corneal ulcer

In 2005, a federal law was passed that classified all contact lenses as medical devices and restricted their distribution to licensed eye-care professionals. Illegal sale of contacts can result in civil penalties of up to $11,000 per violation.

The safe and effective use of contact lenses-whether decorative or not-requires proper fitting and education about their care to prevent the potential for serious eye  problems from becoming a reality.

NY LASIK Surgeon on Eyes & Being Pregnant

NY LASIK Surgeon Satish Modi, M.D. discussed how being pregnant can affect your eyes and the decision to have LASIK surgery. “Potential LASIK candidates are often surprised when I ask them at their consultation if they are, or are considering becoming pregnant. They ask, “What does being pregnant have to with my eyes? Sometimes quite a bit I tell them,” explained Dr. Modi.

During pregnancy your body undergoes fluctuations in hormone levels, changes in fluid retention and even an increase in your overall blood volume. These types of changes can result in your eyes changing in various ways. Fortunately eye changes due to pregnancy are usually temporary and resolve after the baby is born or after the cessation of breast feeding. Typically vision changes are minor and don’t require a change in eyeglasses, however there are some eye changes that do require care and attention.

“If you were thinking about having LASIK you should delay your actual LASIK Surgery procedure until at least three months after your delivery or three months after you stop nursing. This is necessary because the thickness of your cornea may fluctuate during pregnancy and will reduce the accuracy of the LASIK correction. Also, hormonal fluctuations are often the cause of dry eye. This can make you uncomfortable by itself and can certainly make wearing your contact lenses more difficult,” further explained Dr. Modi. If you experience dry eyes during pregnancy be sure to consult your eye care provider so that “pregnancy-safe” lubricating eye drops or other alternative treatments for dry eye can be prescribed. Sometimes simply eating foods high in omega-3 fatty acids such as salmon, flax seeds and walnuts, may help resolve dry eye and also supports general good health.

“On a more serious note, if your vision becomes noticeably blurry, it may signal high blood pressure or pregnancy-related diabetes,” cautioned Dr, Modi. “If you experience dry eyes, changes in vision or especially very blurred vision during pregnancy it is important to schedule an appointment to see us.”

Affordable Bladeless LASIK in NY

“Believe it or not, most NY patients are surprised about how affordable Bladeless LASIK is at Seeta Eye Centers in Poughkeepsie, New York,” shared Stacey Koch. “We take the time to work with each patient in order you to help you achieve your personal vision correction goals at Seeta Eye Centers. Then we review any and all possible payment options and payment plans to help make it affordable for you.”

“Many of our patients use our easy monthly payment plans. We can arrange the amount you pay each month to fit your budget-in most instances you do not even have to put any money down and we can do this with 0% interest if you would like,” explained Ms. Koch. “Also, we find that it is pretty common these days for employers to offer Flex Plans-Flexible Spending Accounts or FSA’s. These plans allow you to have money taken out of your paycheck over time to pay for LASIK. What is even more appealing about Flex Plans is that money is withheld in Pre-Tax dollars allowing you to get extra tax savings. But patients thinking about using a Flex Plan for LASIK or even elective Lens Implants need to do so pretty soon as this benefit is due to be limited as Obamacare gets implemented.”

Other ways Bladeless LASIK can be made pretty affordable at Seeta Eye Centers is through the use of insurance and discounted fee for service plans. More and more health insurance or vision insurance plans are offering partial coverage or a discount for LASIK to their participants. “When you come in for your free LASIK consultation, we will check all the possibilities to see what might be applicable or what you might be eligible for,” she said. “Even if we are not a direct provider on your plan, if you have coverage, we will make every attempt to honor your benefit allowance when you come to Seeta Eye Centers.

If you or someone you know would like to learn more about LASIK and whether they are a good candidate please and how we can make bladeless LASIK affordable, call Seeta Eye Centers for a free LASIK consultation at 845-454-1025, visit Seeta Eye Centers or facebook.com/seetaeyecenters.

NY Doctor on Eye Injury Prevention

NY eye doctor Andreas Wolter, M.D. of Seeta Eye Centers in Poughkeepsie, New York alerted us about the need to be thoughtful about eye injury prevention. “As an eye physician and surgeon I think it’s important to discuss eye protection and eye injury prevention with patients. Protecting your eyes-even for what seems like ordinary daily activities is a good common sense first step,” remarked Dr. Wolter. “For example, when we go out to mow the lawn, jump-start the car or get ready to do some fall cleaning, the last thing we think about is protecting our eyes. I encourage patients to take a minute and think about what they might do for eye protection before beginning-I ask them to make it top of mind.”

Some ordinary situations and activities that warrant a bit of extra thought about protecting one’s eyes include handling household chemicals, such as cleaning fluids, detergents and ammonia. “These liquids are extremely hazardous and can burn the eye's delicate tissues,” noted Dr. Wolter. When using chemicals, always read instructions and labels carefully, work in a well-ventilated area and make sure spray nozzles point away from you and others before spraying. Be sure to wash your hands thoroughly after use.

Another area to be sensitive to is the potential for eye injury when doing yard work. Before using a lawnmower, power trimmer or edger, check for debris. Stones, twigs and other items can become dangerous projectiles shooting from the blades of a lawnmower, potentially injuring your eyes or those of innocent bystanders. Prevention is the first and most important step in avoiding serious eye injuries, so be sure to protect your eyes with appropriate protective eyewear.

October has been designated Eye Injury Prevention Month by the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
